- You guys don't need to know this bit of history - but I'mma tell it to you anyway.

Pip is a character that I've been 'borrowing' from my dad for as long as I can remember. He created Pip back when he was in high school either out of boredom, or because he was trying to impress some girl, or - actually, I don't really know why. Either way, he filled a stack of paper with comic strips featuring multiple Pips (there were even a couple of females) and a character named Purple Treefrog (PT for short).
There were like four or five strips per page - filled with jokes about pot, sex, dogshit, and venereal disease. As a child, I thought they were the greatest things ever drawn. My favorite ones featured Pip as Master of Ceremonies, with his suit and bowtie. And whenever he performed a magic trick, it would go horribly and embarassingly wrong.

When I started drawing comics with Ada Lee in them, I made Pip her manager. I like the idea that he's extremely nice (nicer than a lot of people) even though he's a demon. In the older stuff, Pip was the perfect straight-man to Ada's... crazy bitch (for lack of a better term - no really, i tried to think of one).

So yeah - I can't claim full responsibility for Pip. Sure, I've changed a lot of his personality, and how he looks - but Pip is my dad's character. I'm grateful that my dad 'lets' me draw him - and I'm eternally grateful for having my dad as a father.

Happy birthday, old man. :)

Happy birthday, Jack's dad! You should post those Pip strips as a webcomic.

And I don't mind telling you, that Pop-1998 strip made me laugh so hard the wife asked me what was going on. POGS!

Heh....battery holder indeed.

Your dad sounds interesting. Happy birthday to him indeed. Also, he did a good job on inventing Pip, as you did adapting him to the comic. Good job, both of you.

I think it's totally cool that you got Pip from your dad. Several of my characters are 'borrowed' from friends who let me have them, and Stabilizer is from a lot of what I've learned from my mom about psychology, so I can totally relate. Pip is fucking adorable, too.
